August 31st, 2015

Talented mare Madam Gangster has delivered Lee and Shannon Hope an impressive black type success early in the 2015 Spring Carnival over the weekend; producing an impressive final straight sprint to take out the Group 3 Cockram Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield.

Madam Gangster was rated only a slight chance of success at double figure odds in 2015 Cockram Stakes betting markets after being drawn alongside a particularly talented field of mares, but more than put herself in the mix from the outset after jumping well and settling in prime position on the heels of the race’s early leaders.

Receiving and ideal run in transit, jockey Blake Shinn elected to pull off the fence rounding onto the final straight and was rewarded for the decision when the classy daughter of Al Maher produced an impressive turn of foot to poke clear of a fast-finishing Hazard on the line; Vezalay boxing on for third.

Shinn was thrilled with the feel offered up by Madam Gangster in the 2015 Cockram Stakes and was pleased to deliver step-father and step-brother Lee and Shannon Hope the black type win.

“It is very special to come down here and get a ride for my family on a big Group 1 day,” Shinn said after the race.

“To pull it off means the world to me, my step-dad, step-brother Shannon and Mum put a lot of work in to a horse like this and it shows that she has come in great order to be able to get the result for them.

“She ran a great fourth in Sydney behind Catkins and Lee was quietly confident today.

“It is a great result to come back and deliver for them.”

Lee Hope was on hand for Madam Gangster’s impressive performance in the 2015 Cockram Stakes and confirmed the Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) at Flemington in a fortnight will likely figure as her next competitive point of call.

“Coming here the 1200 was always a little bit of a worry and I don’t think that she is as good on a deteriorating track to be truthful,” Hope said.

“She has always had a lot of fight in her and she has a lot of guts, so just the way that she battled it out was right up there because I don’t think that she really handled it.

“As long as she pulls up alright she will go to the Let’s Elope.

“That is always in your mind, but you just have to keep progressing.”
