A talented and capacity field of 16 mares and one emergency has been confirmed for Saturday’s Group 3 Cockram Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield; highlighted by the inclusion of some of the Spring Carnival’s most exciting racing prospects.
Girl Guide charged home to win the 2014 edition of the Cockram Stakes and will leave from the central barrier 8 in her title defence on Saturday.
Arguably finding career-best form to date through the 2014 Spring Carnival, Girl Guide followed up her Cockram Stakes success with close second place finishes in each of the Group 3 How Now Stakes (1200m) and Group 2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m); returning to the paddock following a credible performance for sixth in the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m).
While unable to make much of an impact through four autumn starts, other than a close second behind fellow Cockram Stakes runner Madam Gangster in the Group 3 Frances Tressady Stakes (1400m), Girl Guide is reportedly in great condition ahead of her return on Saturday.
Madam Gangster has posted five wins and two minors through a consistent seventeen start career so far, has finished outside the first three only once since transferring to the care of Lee and Shannon Hope prior to the 2014 Spring Carnival but will need plenty of luck in to Cockram Stakes from barrier 15.
Returning this year for her impressive success in the Frances Tressady Stakes, the Al Maher mare has not been seen at the races since running on for fourth in the Group 2 Emancipation Stakes (1500m) on March 28th.
Two-time Group 1 winner Cosmic Endeavour may also need a little luck in the Cockram Stakes from barrier 9, but is undoubtedly the class horse of the field and will be partnered by Kerrin McEvoy first-up.
Ending a standout 2014 campaign with success in the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m), Cosmic Endeavour ran fourth in the Group 3 Triscay Stakes (1200m) first-up this year; progressing to second in the Group 3 Guy Walter Stakes (1400m) before taking out the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) on February 28th.
While unable to figure in her next two starts, the Northern Meteor mare returned to the paddock following a credible performance for fifth in the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) on Day 2 of The Championships.
Griante clearly needed the run when ninth in the Listed Regal Roller Stakes (1200m) first-up a fortnight ago, but should relish a return to mares’ company in the 2015 Cockram Stakes.
The undoubted stable star for David Brideoake, Griante returned this year for fourth in the Group 3 Bellmaine Stakes (1200m) on February 14th; progressing to success in the Group 3 Wenona Girl Quality (1200m) before musting a huge turn of foot to finish third in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m).
Having returned to the paddock after finishing second in the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes (1200m), Griante is also going to need luck to figure from the wide barrier 14.
