2015 Cockram Stakes First-Up For Hazard

July 22nd, 2015

Trainer Lee Freedman is thrilled that Godolphin Australia have elected to keep Hazard in work for the 2015 Spring Carnival, and has revealed he will set the talented mare for a racing return in the Group 3 Cockram Stakes (1200m) on August 29th.

Hazard was due to retire into a career as a broodmare prior to the recent Autumn and Winter Carnivals, but Team Freedman managed to convince Godolphin’s Henry Plumptre to let the mare be trained once more.

Having returned for an impressive win in the Grand Hotel Frankston BM90 (1000m), the daughter of Flying Spur repeated the dose in the Ern Jensen Funerals Handicap (1100m) before posting arguably her two best career results in taking out each of the Group 3 Proud Miss Stakes (1200m) and Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1350m).

Running seventh in less-than ideal conditions in the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) on June 20th, Freedman told Racing Ahead he is thrilled to the condition of the rising five-year-old and believes the 2015 Cockram Stakes will figure as an ideal first point of call.

“She swam every day and had a bit of paddock and we just kept her interested, just kept her from getting fat,” Freedman said.

“I am really delighted with her condition and she’ll probably run in that mares’ stakes race at the end of August as a lead-in run to the Let’s Elope and then beyond that we’ll see what her form is like.

“If she doesn’t attain the same form by early to mid-September then there’s always the option of her going onto the breeding barn.

“Everything that I’ve seen of her since she’s been back from Brisbane is she’s retained her zest for racing.

“I think a mare like her that’s made about an 18 point improvement in her form and is now considered to be one of the better top 10-12-1400m mares in Australia there’s certainly some good options for her in the spring.”

Hazard has won ten of 26 competitive starts to date; placing in the first three a further five times for a total of $551,615 in prize money.
