Just eleven runners remain in the final field for the 2014 Cockram Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield Racecourse, offering punters exceptional value from a betting point of view, and several key opportunities to place a winning bet.
Having returned to racing in great condition this time in, smart mare Gregers has opened as and maintained status as outright favourite for success in the 2014 Cockram Stakes, currently available at odds of $2.70, ahead of A Time For Julia ($4.80), Real Surreal ($5.50) and returning Group 1 champion Commanding Jewel ($7.50).
Will Gregers complete an ideal return to black type company in the 2014 Cockram Stakes, or will one of her talented rivals find the line in the clear?
A Time For Julia ($4.80)
Securing a commendable total of four wins and as many minor places over just 12 competitive starts to date, A Time For Julia performed to a high standard through the 2014 Autumn Carnival and is well and truly worth consideration for a wager at current odds for the Cockram Stakes. Charging home to win the Group 3 Bellmaine Stakes (1200m) first-up on February 8th, the Redoute’s Choice mare finished second to champion mare Red Tracer in the Group 2 Millie Fox Stakes (1300m) on March 1st before returning to the winner’s circle in the Group 3 Roy Higgins Tribute (1200m) on March 15th. Laying a great account of herself through two Group 1 races to end her campaign, A Time For Julia has an exceptional first-up record and is a great chance of success in the 2014 Cockram Stakes.
Confirmed to be partnered by leading jockey Craig Williams, Gregers is a great chance of going two-from-two in the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival with victory in the Group 3 Cockram Stakes, but faces a far-tougher task than that of her first start. Performing well through autumn, Gregers finished within two lengths of the world’s leading sprinter Lankan Rupee in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) first-up on February 22nd before finishing second to Anatina in the Listed MSS Security Stakes (1100m) a fortnight later. Finishing fourth in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) and third in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Classic (1200m) on April 26th, the Commands mare returned to the paddock after finishing fourth in the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) on May 10th. Charging home to win the Australian Defence Force Handicap (1100m) with ease on August 16th, Gregers will more than likely finish in this top three this weekend.
Commanding Jewel ($7.50)
Arguably the classiest mare confirmed for the 2014 Cockram Stakes, Commanding Jewel has not been seen at the races in nearly a year following an unfortunate run of injuries. Finishing outside the places just once in seven competitive starts to date, which has also included four impressive wins, Commanding Jewel won each of her first two starts and continued to build in form and class on her way to a maiden victory at the highest level of Australian racing when comfortably claiming the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) in October 2012. Pleased with the form of the Commands mare in the lead-up to her racing return, trainer Leon Corstens is confident jockey Damien Oliver will again get this best from his runner in the 2014 Cockram Stakes.
