A talented field of 25 four-year-old and upwards mares have been nominated for an appearance in this weekend’s Group 3 Cockram Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield, highlighted by several resuming runners geared towards major Group 1 spring events.
Having not been seen on track for close to a year following a series of unfortunate injuries, Team Corstens have nominated Group 1 winner Commanding Jewel for the 2014 Cockram Stakes.
Securing an impressive total of four wins and two minor places from just seven competitive race starts so far, Commanding Jewel has not been seen at the races since comfortably winning the Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on September 7th; suffering a tendon injury before badly damaging her hoof in a training accident in the lead-up to the 2014 Autumn Carnival.
Stamping her claims as a serious contender from her maiden racing preparation, the Commands mare won each of her first two race starts in the spring of 2012 before placing second in the Group 3 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m), third in the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1610m) and breaking through for a maiden victory at the highest level of Australian racing in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) in October.
While disappointed by the year lost to injury, trainer Leon Corstens is pleased Commanding Jewel’s racing returned has finally arrived, and is confident recent barrier trial form will translate into first-up success in the Cockram Stakes.
Finishing second to Commanding Jewel in her 2014 Thousand Guineas triumph, Dear Demi has completed two strong barrier trials over recent weeks and appears primed for a return to racing in the 2014 Cockram Stakes.
Disappointing over the 2014 autumn season, the Dehere mare appeared to have returned to the track in good form when running on for third in the Group 3 Wiggle Stakes (1400m) on March 8th, however failed to fire in placing eleventh in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) before failing to beat a single runner home in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) on April 12th and finishing well off the pace in eighth in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m).
A standout in spring events however, Dear Demi was unlucky not to secure victory at the highest level of Australian racing through the 2013 Spring Carnival, finishing third in both the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) and Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) and second in the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) most notably.
A notable performer amongst classy competition through the 2014 Autumn Carnival, trainer Peter Moody has nominated A Time For Julia for a racing return in the 2014 Cockram Stakes.
Contesting four wins and as many minor places from just 12 starts to date, A Time For Julia charged home to win the Group 3 Bellmaine Stakes (1200m) with ease first-up on February 8th before finishing second to Red Tracer in the Group 2 Millie Fox Stakes (1300m) on March 1st.
Returning to the winner’s circle in the Group 3 Roy Higgins Tribute, the Redoute’s Choice mare finished a credible fourth in the Coolmore Classic on March 22nd, returning to the paddock after claiming an unlucky seventh when blocked for a run in the final straight of the Group 1 Robert Sangster Classic (1200m).
Stamping her claims as one to watch through the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival with a commanding victory at Caulfield first-up on August 16th, Gregers performed to a particularly high standard in black type company through autumn, and is a great chance to continue her perfect spring campaign through the Cockram Stakes.
Finishing fourth in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) first-up on February 22nd, the Commands mare ran on to finish second in the Listed MSS Security Stakes (1100m) on March 8th before finishing a credible fourth in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m), third in the Robert Sangster and fourth in the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) on May 10th.
A final field of 16 and barrier draw for the 2014 Cockram Stakes is due to be released on Wednesday morning.
